If you pre- ordered your book, and have no more than 2 detentions to serve, you'll get an invite in 6th period!!

 

Here’s how this whole thing is going down...

During 6th period, we will be passing out yearbooks in the Big Gym. Attached to this note is a nifty wristband. PUT IT ON and DON'T LOSE IT! You MUST have it ON YOUR WRIST to enter the gym! AND BRING YOUR ID!! You will be excused from class around 2pm to head down to the Big Gym. Get in the correct line to pick up you book- sorted by LAST NAME. You’ll show your ID, and you’ll sign for that you received and reviewed for printing errors (miscut pages, upside sections, etc.) and then you will receive a raffle ticket and you may choose which gift card you’d like to win by placing your ticket in the correct bucket! One ticket per student.

 

We will also be selling, to 8th graders only, last year’s yearbooks on CLEARANCE for $10, and extra autograph pages for $2, so bring your cash! We’ll have music playing the bleachers pulled out, so hangout and enjoy the time to look at your memories with your friends!

 

If for some reason you can’t pick up your book at the party, you can come by the office during Break or Lunch through the end of the year to pick up your reserved book. But you’ll need your ID and you’ll have to sign for it. We don't make the rules. Just kidding, yes we do.

 

Get ready to see the 2017-18  *APP-solutely colorful* yearbooks first!

The 8th grade end-of-the year dance is on Friday, June 1st from 4:45 – 7:00p.m!

 

Tickets are on sale from Friday, 5/25 through Friday, 6/1. Tickets cost $5 cash or 25 Bronco Bucks (must have ID card in order to purchase a ticket).

 

Guidelines:

  • A signed ticket must be turned in and student ID must be worn as you enter the door.
  • Students must attend school on the day of the dance to be admitted.
  • Students who have lost privileges will not be admitted to the dance.
  • Students who currently OWE detention/Friday School may NOT attend.
  • All clothing must be aligned with school and district dress policy.
  • There are no refunds.
  • Snacks and goodies will be provided, sponsored by Bernal HSA.
  • Students must demonstrate RISE behavior at all times. Students violating RISE will be removed from the dance and must be picked up by a parent.
  • Students may not leave the dance early, unless a parent comes to the office to sign him/her out.
  • Students must be picked up promptly at 7:00p.m.

Dear 7th grade parents/guardians,

 

We are providing a fun and exciting reward for our seventh grade students on Tuesday, June 5th while the 8th graders are at Great America. A video game truck will be on campus! Here is what will be available to students:

  • Virtual Reality (VR) Driving Simulator
  • 5 Sony PS4 VR Stations
  • XBox 360
  • Wii U
  • Xbox One
  • 5 HD Big Screen Televisions
  • Single Player and Multiplayer Opportunities

 

Students will be placed in groups of 20 and will be able to play for 20-30 minutes at a time depending on the number of sign-ups (students must sign up in order to participate). 7th grade students can sign up at lunch on Tues 5/29, Wed 5/30, Thurs 5/31 outside by the music room! The truck will be at Bernal from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on 6/5, so students will be pulled out of classes once the groups are formed.

 

In order to join the fun, students cannot have any outstanding detentions or Friday schools.

Hello Bernal Broncos!

 

Yearbook distribution day is quickly approaching!

 

Students who have 3 or more unserved detentions/Friday schools will NOT receive an invitation to the VIP distribution event held during the school day on campus. There will be music and chances for prizes, so don't miss out! Of course, any students who pre-paid  for their yearbooks will still receive a book, but they will NOT participate in this incentive event to celebrate their arrival. 

 

Students, if you have or plan to reserve a copy of your book and you'd like to attend this fun event held during the school day, please make sure you are serving any detentions you have already been assigned and/or may be assigned from now until the end of the month.*  

 

Remember that Yearbook Staff are still taking pre-sales in the office, so it's not too late. Books are $45 cash or check (made to Bernal Intermediate School; Yearbook 2018 in the notes).

 

*The yearbooks are scheduled to ship from the publisher's facility in Kansas on May 26 and it takes a few days for them to make to our campus, so the actual arrival date in still TBD.

Two Summer Resources Hosted by Edenvale Library:

 

1) Edenvale Library will be hosting Summer Skills tutoring by trained teen and adult volunteers at the library over the summer months to help students (grades K-8) work to prevent so-called "summer slide" and keep their reading, writing and math skills sharp. The program will be held at Edenvale Library at least three times per week from June 11 to August 10th. See attached flyer for more information.

 

2) San Jose Public Library's 2018 Free Summer Food Program for children ages 3-17 and their families. Edenvale Library is a participating site for this year's program.

Bernal’s fifth Super Saturday Academy Session is Saturday, April 28th from 8:15am - 12:30pm! Attending the Super Saturday will allow students to make up one absence from this school year. Permission slips will be sent home Tuesday, April 17th in your child's advisory class. I've attached a blank copy of the permission slip for you as well. (Priority will go to students who have absences to clear, but all students are welcome to turn in a permission slip).

 

Students will need to turn in their permission slips by Tuesday, April 24th and attend the full session on April 28th so they can:

  • Earn 10 Bronco Bucks!
  • Be entered into a raffle to earn a pizza party for them and 5 friends!
  • Earn an In-n-Out certificate!
  • Be entered into a raffle to win a mile pass for P.E.!

Please encourage your child to attend this Super Saturday Academy Session to participate in exciting experiments, art projects, hands-on activities, engineering challenges, and so much more!

California students take several mandated statewide tests. These tests provide parents/guardians, teachers, and educators with information about how well students are learning and becoming college and career ready. The test results may be used for local, state, and federal accountability purposes.

 

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress

 

Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium Assessments

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) computer adaptive assessments are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics tests are administered in grades three through eight and grade eleven to measure whether students are on track to college and career readiness. In grade eleven, results from the ELA and math assessments can be used as an indicator of college readiness.

 

California Science Tests (CAST)

The new, computer-based CAST measures student acquisition of the California Next Generation Science Standards. It is administered in grades five and eight, and once in high school. The new computer-based CAST replaces the California Standards Tests (CST) for Science.

 

California Alternate Assessments (CAA)

The computer-based CAA for ELA and CAA for mathematics is administered to students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in grades three through eight and grade eleven. Test items are aligned with the CCSS and are based on the Core Content Connectors. The instructionally embedded CAA for Science is administered in grades five and eight, and once in high school.

 

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California

California will transition from the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) to the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) in 2017–18. The ELPAC is aligned with the 2012 California English Language Development Standards. It consists of two separate English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessments: one for the initial identification of students as English learners and the other for the annual summative assessment to identify students’ English language proficiency level and to measure their progress in learning English.

 

Physical Fitness Test

The physical fitness test (PFT) for students in California schools is the FitnessGram®. The main goal of the test is to help students in starting lifelong habits of regular physical activity. Students in grades five, seven, and nine take the fitness test.

Bernal’s fourth Super Saturday Academy Session is Saturday, March 10th from 8:15am - 12:30pm! Attending the Super Saturday will allow students to make up one absence from this school year. Permission slips were sent home on this past Monday, February 26th during your child's advisory class. I've attached a blank copy of the permission slip for you as well. (Priority will go to students who have absences to clear, but all students are welcome to turn in a permission slip).

 

Students will need to turn in their permission slips by Tuesday, March 6th and attend the full session on March 10th so they can:

  • Earn 10 Bronco Bucks!
  • Be entered into a raffle to earn a pizza party for them and 5 friends!
  • Earn an In-n-Out certificate!
  • Be entered into a raffle to win a mile pass for P.E.!

Dear Bernal Community,

 

Many in our community continue to process feelings of shock, sadness, fear, and frustration in the wake of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.  While it is difficult to come up with the right words of comfort as you send your children off to school each day, please be assured that school safety is, and has always been, our number one priority.  Here is what we have in place at Bernal Intermediate:   

 

·        Counselors:  trained professional(s) at each building who provide services to students and families

·        School Resource Officer:  a part-time police officer trained to work proactively with students and staff

·        Annual Run, Hide, Defend Training & Drills:  all district staff have been trained on strategies, guidance, and a proven plan for surviving an active shooter event

·        School entrances:  all exterior doors locked after students enter in the morning

·        Emergency Response Guide:  posted in each classroom and office containing plans for handling many types of emergencies, including an active shooter event

·        School Climate & PBIS: a strong emphasis on the importance of establishing a positive school climate

·        Safe School Plan: annually revised to put student safety at the forefront of the school’s action plan

 

Also, administration has discussed the recent news of possible national student protests and walkouts scheduled for March 14, 2018 for 17 minutes. We will neither encourage nor discourage student walkouts, nor will we prevent students from participating or discipline them if they do (as long as they remain on campus during this time). Administration will facilitate any walkouts so that they are carried out in an organized and safe fashion by adjusting our bell schedule to allow for the daily student break time to correspond with the 10am nationwide walk out. Therefore, students will have the option to express their viewpoints on the turf side field from 10-10:21am on March 14th, while students who do not intend to participate can proceed with their break as usual. We want any type of protest to be a positive learning experience for students.

We are pleased to announce that Bernal Intermediate School has scheduled the play Nightmare on Puberty Street for all students on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. Nightmare on Puberty Street is a free play from Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre Programs that has been performed for over 5 million students across Northern California.

 

Education Code (EC) 51938 requires school districts to notify parents about any “instruction in comprehensive sexual health education or HIV/AIDS prevention education.” Nightmare on Puberty Street contains sexual health information. For more information about the play, please view the parent guide (see attached).

Hi Bernal Families,

 

The HSA is getting ready to host the Scholastic Book Fair in the Bernal Library March 12-16th. At the fair last fall we sold candy, to the students, to raise money to purchase books for the library and classrooms. It was such a huge success that we decided to do it again! We are asking families to donate candy for the All for Books program. Not only does your donation help our cause, but Scholastic Book Fairs® will match monetary donations (the amount we raise by selling the candy) with a donation of up to $1 million in books from The Scholastic Possible Fund, which distrib- utes books to children in need through organizations such as Kids In Need Foundation, Reader to Reader, Inc., and the National Center for Families Learning.

 
 

The best sellers last fair were Ring Pops, Pop Rocks, Cotton Candy, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and sour candy. (All of these candies can be found at Dollar Tree and Costco at good prices.) But the students love all candy. So if you find some great deals after Valentine's Day, please pick up a couple bags. All donations can be dropped off at the front office or at the HSA table at Honors Night (March 7th). Remember to mark the bags "Book Fair.' In the unlikely event we have leftover candy, it will be donated to the student store.

 

Please look for additional School Loop messages on volunteering at the book fair and donations for the Teacher Preview Day.

Black History Month, or African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.

 

February 7, 2018. 

Today we will recognize Mary Edmonia Lewis is considered to be the first internationally renowned African & Native American sculptor. She worked for most of her career in Italy, and gained prominence during the American Civil War. She remained the only black woman to participate in and be recognized to any degree by the American artistic mainstream.  Next time you see or hear about art and sculpture, be sure to think about Mary Edmonia Lewis.  Below is her picture and a few examples of her sculptures.

Today in African American History we celebrate Dorothy Johnson Vaughan worked as a NASA mathematician on the SCOUT Launch Vehicle Program that launched America’s first satellites into space.

 

Who Was Dorothy Johnson Vaughan?

Dorothy Johnson Vaughan was an African-American mathematics teacher who became one of the leading mathematical engineers in early days of the aerospace industry.  Vaughan and other female African-American mathematicians are the subject of a 2016 film Hidden Figures.

 

 

 

On February 15: Feb. 15, 1848 - Sarah Roberts barred from white school in Boston. Her father, Benjamin Roberts, filed the first school integration suit on her behalf.  Overview of Case: 

Roberts v. Boston centered on Sarah Roberts, a five-year-old African-American girl. She was enrolled in Abiel Smith School, an underfunded all-black common school, far from her home in Boston, Massachusetts. Her father, Benjamin F. Roberts, also African-American, attempted to enroll her at closer, whites-only schools. After Ms. Roberts was denied on the basis of her race, and being physically removed from one school, Roberts wrote to the state legislature to seek a solution. Eventually, the Supreme Court of Massachusetts heard the case, in which Benjamin Roberts listed his daughter Sarah as the Plaintiff and the City of Boston as the Defendant. Not all African-Americans supported Roberts; most believed in "separate but equal" schooling and questioned the kind of education their children would receive from a white teacher. The defendant's attorney was Peleg Chandler, the plaintiff's attorneys were Charles Sumner and Robert Morris (one of the country's first African-American lawyers), and the judge was Lemuel Shaw. Sumner argued base on the distance that Sarah had to travel and the psychological trauma the girl would experience having to go to an all-black, sub-standard school.[1] Despite the Plaintiff's lawyers' best efforts, Shaw ruled for the Defendant.[2]

Roberts brought the issue to the state legislature with Sumner's help and in 1855, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts banned segregated schools in the state.[3] This was the first law prohibiting segregated schools in the United States.

Event: Oak Grove's Middle School Open House for incoming 9th graders and their parents.

This open house is intended to showcase Oak Grove's academics and other school programs to our potential incoming freshmen and their parents.  Teachers, students, and counseling team will be available to answer questions about academics, programs, college and grad requirements, etc.

National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID)

NAAPID is a national call to action to get African American parents more involved in their children's education. It is expected that this national observation will open up dialogue among teachers, parents, and students, which will lead to a more conducive learning environment for African -American students from kindergarten through college.


National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) will be observed Monday, February 12, 2018. Parents will be taking their children to school/visiting their children in school in support of this national endeavor to encourage parents to come together in a single setting to promote educational excellence for today’s youths. “Of all the civil rights for which the world has struggled and fought for five thousand years, the right to learn is undoubtedly the most fundamental.” (W.E.B.DuBois). The Second Monday in February during Black History Month was selected by the NAACP as an excellent opportunity for improving home, school and community relations.

 
Research supports parental involvement as a viable means of enhancing children’s academic successes. Every parent wants their child to have a better quality of life than they themselves have had. It is the American dream, and for many African Americans, this dream has not been realized as a result of their child’s failure in school. Education is the key to success and parents are educators’ greatest allies.

While the focus of the day (during Black History month) is primarily focused on African Americans, the purpose and intent of NAAPID is not mutually exclusive. ALL parents are encouraged to participate. This national observation provides a vehicle to open up dialogue among teachers, parents and students that will lead to a more conducive learning environment for every student from kindergarten through college. School districts across the nation are requested to make a special effort to make this day “parent friendly”.

Events and activities for the day are at the discretion of the schools. Things to do can range from classroom visitations to luncheons/dinners to national speakers to weeklong celebrations. Some districts have even formed a coalition to work together to present “NAAPID at Night” in order to further expand the school day and to allow parents an opportunity to be involved who are unable to attend during regular school hours.

We ask that public and parochial institutions of learning plan to participate in this win/win endeavor. NAAPID needs not only the academic community, but also the “village” as a whole.

Our next all school dance is coming up on Friday February 9th. The dances are a great time for all who attend. The kids love the music but REALLY love the concessions! We offer pizza ( little Cesars )  soda, water, popcorn, and chips. The HSA provides the pizza but we are Kindly asking for donations of Water, Soda, and individual chip bags. Donations can be dropped off anytime in the next couple of weeks to the front office. Please clearly label donations FOR FEBRUARY DANCE. The kids especially love COKE and ORANGE soda.

Hi Parents and Guardians,

 

The Home and School Association is working to provide a $5 gift card to all the teachers and staff at their holiday lunch on December 20th. We are asking you, our Bernal family, to help us by donating $5 gift cards to the front office before December 19th. We will display the gift cards at the luncheon for the teachers and staff, giving each person a chance to choose. We were able to provide these $5 gift cards at the end of last year as well, and they were all very thankful for the gifts. We need to collect 70 gift cards before December 19th. On Monday, November 27th, many students received an invitation/permission slip (see example letter pictured below) to attend Bernal’s first Super Saturday Academy Session on Saturday, December 9th from 8:15am - 12:30pm! Attending the Super Saturday will allow students to make up one absence from this school year.

 

Students need to turn in their permission slip by next Monday, December 4th and attend the full session on Saturday, December 9th so they can:

  • Earn 10 Bronco Bucks!

  • Be entered into a raffle to earn a pizza party for them and 5 friends!

  • Earn an In-n-Out certificate!

  • Be entered into a raffle to win a free mile pass for P.E.!

 

Please encourage your student to attend this first Super Saturday Academy Session to participate in exciting experimentshands-on activities, and engineering challenges, and so much more! The session on 12/9 will be lead by Mr. Barham and/or Mr. Medina!

There will be a display of visual and performing arts including singing, dancing, and musical performances by Oak Grove students. Food trucks will be present for you to enjoy! The event is free, but a $5 donation per family to support the arts will be greatly appreciated. Please be sure to attend!

The Hero program is used by schools nationwide for recognizing stand-out student behavior. Hero will help us operate efficiently, and it will help us keep consistent policies running throughout the school. Hero will keep an accurate record of things like tardies, school event attendance, classroom participation, and positive student behavior. Hero also allows our staff to be more data driven.

 

In the simplest sense, Hero will help Bernal run more efficiently, which means that the biggest impact of the program will be that your child will spend more time in class. Many Hero schools have seen big changes in school climate, which means that that time will be safer and more productive, too.

 

Hero takes their responsibility to protect sensitive student information very seriously. Along with top of the line technical security, they have internal policies that put your child’s privacy first. It’s also important to note that Hero doesn’t store any SSNs or student health records, and that the data Hero collects is strictly behavioral.

 

At Bernal, your child’s privacy, security and safety are of the utmost importance to us. Because of this, we will work closely with Hero to ensure that the programs we put in place are not only FERPA compliant, but also compliant with all requirements unique to our state, our district, and our school. Fall Fundraiser for Bernal Intermediate

Important Information for All Parents and Students - Your Support Is Needed!

 

Bernal’s Annual Fall Fundraiser is now underway! The school’s major fundraisers for this year are Mixed Bag Designs and Gourmet Cookie Dough/Cheesecakes. We depend on its success to provide much needed funding for programs, activities, and equipment for our students. Our goal this year is to raise $20,000 in sales! We have over two weeks to sell to our family and friends in order to accomplish this goal.

 

Because the two fundraisers will run concurrently, there will be two separate order forms. Please make sure to keep these orders separate from one another!

 

For Mixed Bag Designs sales:

·         Make sure the customer's information is filled out on the MBD order form. Do not collect tax!

·         hand   bagMixed Bag Designs also allows for orders online. Email friends and family and ask them to go to www.mixedbagdesigns.com. You’ll need to provide them with Bernal’s fundraiser ID # 569371, the student’s name and their Advisory teacher. All MBD online orders count toward prizes, excluding“sale” items. However, online orders must pay tax and shipping, as well as pay a slightly smaller percentage in terms of earnings for the school. For these reasons, hard copy orders are preferred over online ordering, when possible.

 

For Gourmet Cookie Dough/Cheesecake sales:

·         Make sure the customer's information is filled out on the GCD order form.

·         There are no online sales for this option.

 

Additional Tips for Success:

·         Product delivery day is guaranteed to be in time to be used for holiday gifts. *Actual day TBA.

·         Cookie dough orders need to be picked up after school on the delivery date, and cannot be kept overnight, due to refrigeration needs.

·         There will be extra order forms in the front office.

·       Checks should be made to payable to: Bernal Intermediate and money is due to families at the time the order is placed.

·       All Mixed Bag Designs/online orders and cookie dough orders count toward prizes!

·       An additional prize sheet is included for both individual and group prizes!

Dear Oak Grove School District Community,

 

Due to heavy smoke from the wildfires in the North Bay counties causing unhealthy air quality throughout the Bay Area, we have asked our schools to cancel outdoor activities and field trips have been rescheduled. This means that all outdoor activities need to be canceled or moved indoors. This includes recess, lunch recess, physical education classes, athletic practices, and after school outdoor events and activities. Schools have also been asked to provide extra indoor locations for lunch time, to allow students to remain inside.

 

The wellness and safety of our students is of the utmost priority to us and we want to make sure that students, especially students with health conditions, are indoors and not exposed to the smoke unnecessarily.

 

We are also recommending that students do not walk or ride their bike to school tomorrow, to avoid prolonged exposure outside. Since it is a spare the air day, please try to coordinate carpooling. Students with inhalers should keep them on hand at all times.

 

We will continue to monitor air quality and will be in touch with you once the air quality improves and the school district returns to a regular schedule.

 

Thank you for your understanding as we work to educate our students in safe learning environments.

The safety and welfare of our students and staff is our highest priority. To provide schools an opportunity to practice emergency response procedures, our District Superintendent has asked all students and staff to participate in a District-wide emergency preparedness drill on October 19, 2017 at 10:25 a.m. Please be advised that students will be dismissed at the regular time on this day. 

 

The goals of the training drill are to improve our ability to protect students, save lives, and reduce injuries. They allow us to evaluate our emergency operations plan and improve our response skills. As part of the drill, the students and staff will participate in the activation of our school’s Safe School Plan.

 

In order to protect students, in case of an actual emergency students will only be released to the parents and/or other adults listed on the student’s Emergency Card.  Please ensure that this card has updated and accurate information. It is a good idea to have several trusted adults listed on the card, including one or two who live within walking distance of the school. You should assume that in an actual emergency, telephone communication may not be possible, and so you should discuss your family meeting place and reunification plans in advance with anyone listed on the student’s Emergency card.

 

In the event of an actual emergency approved emergency contact person should bring identification and go directly to the Parent Gathering Area only.  While your student is located, the adult will be directed to the Reunion Gate to meet the child and sign them out. This procedure is designed for your child’s protection and for your peace of mind.

 

Prior to the drill, please discuss your family’s home preparedness plan with your student(s). The American Red Cross has outstanding materials. You can obtain Red Cross materials in English or in Spanish from their website: http://www.redcross.org. Your telephone directory also has valuable information on emergency preparedness, and there are resources to be discovered on the internet in many languages.

Once you receive them review the progress report with your child and make this an opportunity to have a productive conversation with him/her about their successes as well and the areas they need improvement on.

9 Tips for Reacting to Your Child’s Report Card

How you react to your child’s report card can impact his motivation, self-esteem and sense of control over his learning. So it’s important to look beyond the grades before you respond. Consider these common report card scenarios.

  1. Grades improved, but less than you expected.

You might be tempted to say, “I was expecting to see more improvement than this.” But it’s important to remember that any improvement is progress, and even a little bit can take a lot of effort. Recognizing this provides an opportunity to talk about what’s working well.

Instead, try saying, “Well done! What do you think helped you to make those improvements? Would the same strategies be helpful for other subjects, too?”

  1. Grades and attitude both need improvement.

When the news isn’t great, you might be tempted to blurt out, “You’re grounded until your attitude and grades improve!” But take a deep breath and try this approach instead: “I need to take some time to think about what I want to say. We’ll talk about this tomorrow.”

Then, think about what “improvement” looks like. Be realistic and define it for your child: “Here are the expectations for the next marking period. Let’s come up with a plan to make it happen.”

  1. Grades have improved since the last report card.

When the results are positive, you might be tempted to say, “I knew if you tried harder you could do better!” But “trying harder” isn’t how kids with learning and attention issues do better in school.

Instead, you can say something like, “Awesome! Looks like using new strategies for homework and studying really paid off.” Get more tips on how to give praise.

  1. Grades stayed the same, but attitude and effort improved.

When you’re looking for improvement in grades you may overlook teacher comments about progress in other areas. You might be tempted to say, “Well, your attitude is better. If only your grades were better, too.” But if your child doesn’t enjoy school, greater effort and an improved attitude are progress.

Instead, try saying, “It’s good to hear you’re more comfortable in school, and to see that you’re doing well with your homework. Let’s work on test-taking for the next marking period.”

  1. Some grades improved, and others dropped.

Since some subjects have improved, you might be tempted to say, “What happened with the rest of your classes?” But as your child gets older, the expectations for learning change and may be harder to meet in some subjects.

It’s more productive to say, “Your math and science grades look great! But I’m a little disappointed about the others. What’s different in those classes?” Talk about changes that might help, such as a quieter homework area or working with a tutor. If he’s old enough, you can also suggest that he speak with his teachers about strategies that could help him improve.

  1. Your child is failing most classes despite working hard.

If you’re surprised, you might be tempted to say, “You’re failing everything?! I thought you were working hard!” Your child’s performance may have little to do with effort, though. Does he have the necessary supports? Maybe it’s time to talking with a school counselor.

You can say this instead: “I’m really surprised by these grades—I know you worked hard. After we talk about what you think could help you, I’m going to ask for a meeting at school to come up with a better plan.”

  1. Grades have taken a sudden nosedive.

When your child is suddenly failing everything, you might be tempted to say, “What on earth is going on with you?” But it’s important to think about any other signs that something’s wrong. Have you seen changes in his behavior or in his friendships recently?

If so, you could say, “I’m really not happy with this, and I’ve noticed other changes in you lately. Take a day to think about what your teachers and I can do to help. Tomorrow we’ll talk and come up with a plan for moving forward.”

  1. Your child is disappointed he didn’t do better.

You might be tempted to say, “I don’t understand why you’re upset. This report card looks pretty good.” If your child has been expecting a bigger “payoff” for his hard work, however, it might not look good enough.

Instead you can say, “I understand that you’re disappointed, but I’m happy with this. I see your hard work paying off.”

  1. You know he didn’t put in the necessary work.

Out of frustration you might be tempted to say, “I knew this was going to happen! I’m taking your phone until you fix it!” But your child can’t prove it’s “fixed” until the next report card. And that’s too long for any form of punishment to be meaningful or effective.

A better approach might be to say, “You can’t change your report card, but you can—and will—change your approach to school. You aren’t going to use your phone until your homework is done and checked each day.”

Dear Bernal Families,

 

CJSF, our community service/honors club, is working to collect school supplies to send to Hurricane Harvey victims. Sadly, after this weekend, we may need to expand our donation drive to supply students and schools in Florida as well. As of right now, we're working with the Children's Museum of Houston & the Houston Independent School District (the largest school district in Texas), to provide much needed materials to students who have lost their homes and possessions.

 

We are asking for donated items that you may have laying around at the house already, or that you can find on super sale at Target, Walmart, etc.! Here are some requested items:

If you stay after school to participate in a school sport, get extra help from a teacher, and/or use the library to work on assignments, the late activity bus will run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The bus will arrive at 3:30pm and students must have an orange bus pass signed by a teacher in order to ride the late activity bus.

 

This will begin next Tuesday, August 22nd.

Parking Lot Reminder!

 

Just a reminder that there is NO student drop off/pick up or parent parking in the bus and staff parking lot. Students are to be dropped off on the streets adjacent to the school and use the crosswalks to come on to campus. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Starting Thursday, August 24th the Bernal Library will be open every day after school until 3:30pm.  Students who take the bus will be offered a late bus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ONLY. Any student not taking the bus will have to be promptly picked up in front of the school at 3:30pm.

 

Students can use this time after school to finish homework, read or work on group projects in a quiet atmosphere.

Bernal Families,

 

We are very excited for the start of the 2017-2018 school year! Attached you will find information about the first day of school – Monday, August 14, 2017. Your student will report to a designated room (see attached) to pick up his/her schedule promptly at 8:05am. Your student will then report to his/her advisory class to receive important information and paperwork that will be sent home for you to review. Students will then continue to their 1st-6th period classes for the remainder of the day! If your student is an incoming 7th grader or new 8th grader and needs help locating a classroom, just look for the Bernal Leadership students in their purple shirts who will be around campus ready to help! We look forward to seeing all of our Bernal Broncos on Monday!

If you're an incoming 7th grade or new 8th grade student attending Bernal for the 2017-2018 school year and you'd like a tour of the school before the first day of classes, please come to one of the student tour dates below.

 

Wednesday, August 2, 2017 anytime between 1:30pm and 3:00pm

OR

Friday, August 4, 2017 anytime between 10:30am and 12:00pm

 

Tours will be led by 8th grade leadership students. Please click this link to select which date you would prefer to attend. You can drop by anytime between the start and end time of each day. Parents and students are both welcome!
